Viscoelastic Flow Phenomena

Roberto Zenit
Brown University

When observing the flow of a Newtonian fluid, experienced researchers develop an intuition for the types of phenomena that can occur. However, for viscoelastic fluids, this intuition often breaks down, leading to surprising and counterintuitive behaviors. In this talk, I will present a variety of viscoelastic flow phenomena, including the swimming of helical swimmers, the sedimentation of particles, the rise of bubbles and bubbly flows, the coiling of filaments, and other intriguing cases. These examples highlight the challenges in predicting viscoelastic flows due to the nonlinear nature of their constitutive relationships. The objective of this research is to contribute to the development of a broader understanding of complex flows, emphasizing the difficulties and insights that arise in their study.
