In this talk, based on the PhD work of A. Bongarzone, I will first discuss the influence of contact line friction in the decay of sloshing waves at the surface of liquid enclosed in an open container. I will compare a weakly nonlinear model to a piecewise linear projection method, developed for simple geometries. I will extend these models to describe the relaxation dynamics of a liquid column oscillating back and forth in a u-tube, providing comparisons with experiments conducted in collaboration with B. Dollet and E. Lorenceau. Finally, if time permits, I will analyze the role of the presence of a static meniscus on the onset of Faraday waves.
