Vertical shaking of a grain layer is a common strategy to inject energy in a dissipative medium. In this presentation, I will look at the conversion mechanism from vertical forcing to horizontal motion at the scale of a single particle. If the particle is round, the conversion from vertical forcing to horizontal motion is very inefficient but if the particle is not round, a variety of motion can be observed depending on the geometrical and mechanical properties of the particle. The talk will be in 3 parts with linear walkers, circling particles and robot-like soft elements with multimodal locomotion remotely controlled by the shaking parameters, ie frequency and amplitude.
