Simple active particles in simple flows: a complex behaviour

Florence Raynal
LMFA, Lyon

In this talk I will consider very simple active particles, whose natural velocity is linked to a scalar gradient, for example bacteria with nutrients, without any retroaction (the scalar evolves freely); the aim is to study what happens when such particles are exposed to an external flow. I will consider very simple flows (linear or cellular flows). In the case of a cellular flow, the numerical and theoretical results will be compared with those of an experiment consisting of active charged colloids, sensitive to salt gradients, in a horizontal Rayleigh-Bénard cell.
